Sheriff’s deputy forced to restrain combative first-grader after biting and kicking spree

The school resource officer at Fessenden Elementary School in Ocala was called into action Monday afternoon after a first-grade student became combative with teachers, students and school officials.

When the resource officer, who is a Marion County sheriff’s deputy, arrived at the gym, he saw the 6-year-old being restrained against a wall while still attempting to kick the school’s student services manager. The deputy then took control of the boy as he started to bite, kick and hit him, a sheriff’s office report says.

The deputy carried the student to the counselor’s office, where he continued in his efforts to hit and bite him with no success. Once they arrived at the office, the student “calmed down” and advised the deputy “he was upset because two different teachers told him to do separate things,” the report says.

The deputy then explained to the boy the seriousness of trying to bite and kick a law enforcement officer, the report says, adding that school officials also received reports of the first-grader attacking other students during class.

The boy was sent home and the deputy and school officials plan to meet with his parents next week to create a “behavior contract” so he can remain at the school.

The school handled all disciplinary action and no law enforcement action was taken, the report says.
