High Springs woman jailed after FHP trooper finds mixed drink inside vehicle

Kasey Dawn Richey

A High Springs woman with a strong odor of alcohol on her breath was jailed after a recent crash on Interstate 75.

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper investigating the incident at Mile Marker 356 spoke with 35-year-old Kasey Dawn Richey, who was driving a red Honda HR-V. In addition to smelling alcohol, the trooper reported that Richey’s speech was slurred and her movements where lethargic. During a search of her vehicle, he located in the center console a red cup containing a brown liquid that was determined to be a mixed drink, the FHP report says.

The trooper transported Richey to the 354 Mile Marker exit at U.S. Hwy. 27 and conducted four field sobriety tests. She failed all of them and was taken into custody, the report says.
After being read her rights, Richey admitted to the trooper that she was driving the Honda at the time of the crash. She claimed she doesn’t drink but did that day, and the mixed drink the trooper located was Bacardi Rum and soda, the report says.

Richey was transported to the Marion County Jail, where she provided breath samples of .104 and .107 blood alcohol content about three hours after the crash. She was charged with driving under the influence with property damage and released on $5,000 bond.

Richey, who lives in the 8800 block of NE County Road 340 in High Springs, is due in court on Oct. 10 at 8 a.m. to answer to the charge.
