Man charged with dating violence after wild chase

Daronte Williams-Vinson

An Interlachen man was arrested after he allegedly battered his girlfriend and chased her in a vehicle while yelling threats at her.

Daronte Williams-Vinson, 20, was charged with domestic battery (dating violence) and resisting without violence after the incident, which started Sept. 19 at the Country Inn and Suites, 3720 SW College Road in Ocala.

An Ocala Police officer responded to the hotel in reference to an assault, with the assailant possibly being in possession of a firearm. The caller had reported to dispatch that the subject had left the location northbound on Interstate 75 in a silver Hyundai, according to an OPD report.

Upon arrival, the officer made contact with the victim and her legal guardian. The guardian said the victim was battered by Williams-Vinson, her boyfriend of 6 to 8 months. The victim said Williams-Vinson hit her and that she observed him with a black gun. When asked about Williams-Vinson’s whereabouts, the guardian said he was still in the parking lot, asking by phone to see the victim. The officer asked the victim and her guardian to remain in the room while Williams-Vinson was secured, the report said.

The officer observed a man fitting Williams-Vinson’s description on the west end of the parking lot, talking with an unknown female. The victim, who was being treated by EMS, confirmed it was Williams-Vinson, according to the report.

While the officer was awaiting further backup, the victim got into her vehicle and headed towards the exit, stopping long enough to reconfirm Williams-Vinson’s identity. The officer saw Williams-Vinson yelling, “I got something for you, I got something for you,” followed by him jumping into his vehicle and following the victim’s vehicle, the report said.

The officer saw the two vehicles exit the location eastbound onto State Road 200, and then both vehicles made U-turns and headed west. After passing under the I-75 overpass, the victim’s vehicle came to a stop at the red light on the inside lane at SW 38th Court. Williams-Vinson moved into the outside lane and began yelling unknown statements to the victim in her vehicle, according to the report.

The officer tried to conduct a felony traffic stop, due to the report of Williams-Vinson reportedly being in possession of a firearm. Williams-Vinson again turned without signaling onto SW 38th Court, turning into the Marathon gas station at 3821 SW College Road and parking next to a fuel pump, the report said.

Williams-Vinson failed to comply with the officer’s commands to put down the cell phone in his hand, to face away from the officer, or to get on the ground. He continued to resist multiple officer commands and had to be escorted to the ground and detained. A search of the vehicle did not produce a firearm, according to the report.

After being read his Miranda rights, Williams-Vinson said he and the victim have been dating for six or seven months. He said that after he picked up the victim from Marion County Visitation Center, they got into a verbal argument about cheating. Williams-Vinson said the argument continued after they arrived at the motel, where the victim was staying, the report said.

Williams-Vinson admitted to slapping the victim at some point in the back of her neck, saying he was angry and has a bad temper. He also said he is on medications, which he couldn’t name, because he is “slow.” He later said the victim pushed him, however, there were no physical indications of this, according to the report.

Williams-Vinson was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Sept. 19 on $2,000 bond. He’ll appear in Marion County Court on Oct. 22.
