Ashtray-tossing woman accused of battering man she locked out

Miranda Hennessy

A 40-year-old Belleview woman upset about not having running water and other problems in her apartment was arrested after allegedly striking a man multiple times during a nasty lovers’ spat.

The victim told a Belleview Police officer he and Miranda Hennessy have been in a romantic relationship since March. He said returned home from the store Wednesday night and found himself locked out of the apartment by Hennessy, according to the police report.

The victim said he had to go get the property manager to open the door for him and when he went inside, Hennessey threw an ashtray at him from across the room. He said she then began striking him multiple times in the back-right side of his head. The officer was able to feel a small bump on the back of the victim’s head, the report said.

When interviewed by the officer, Hennessy complained about the apartment not having running water and other problems with the residence. The officer could smell alcohol on her breath and she was slurring her speech. Also, she kept placing her hands against the wall to be searched even though the officer never asked to search her, according to the report.

Hennessy said she and the victim were arguing and they both hit each other. When asked how she was hit, she said she was grabbed and punched in her face and lip area. The officer was unable to see any marks on her face, the report said.

Hennessy kept saying she and the victim love each other and neither of them wanted to press charges. The officer then retrieved a knife from Hennessy’s pocket and placed it into evidence for safekeeping. While talking to Hennessy, the officer did see an ashtray laying on the floor near the front door that had cigarette butts scattered around it, according to the report.

The officer went back outside and asked the victim a second time what happened during the incident. He again explained he was locked out of the apartment and when he walked inside, Hennessy threw an ashtray at him and struck him multiple times in the back of his head with her fists, the report said.

The officer determined Hennessy was the aggressor and placed her under arrest. She was taken to the Marion County Jail, where she was still being held Saturday on $2,500 bond. She’ll appear in Marion County Court on Nov. 7.
