Silver Springs woman charged in forged money order scheme

Candy Kay Bradley

A Silver Springs woman with a criminal history was arrested last week after she allegedly tried to cash two forged money orders at a Belleview bank.

Candy Kay Bradley, 40, of 2000 SE 183rd Terrace was charged with two counts of uttering a forged instrument, and single counts of petit theft, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The manager at Regions Bank, 10715 S. U.S. Hwy. 441, told a Belleview Police officer that at around 5 p.m. Tuesday, Bradley drove up to the drive-through-window and tried to cash a money order in the amount of $300. She said Bradley had already cashed a forged money order for $170 the previous day, according to the police report.

The officer observed that Bradley’s name had been written in black marker on top of the name of the person the money order had been previously made out to. The bank manager said she spoke to the victim, who said he wanted to press charges and that the money orders were written out to pay his child support, the report said.

A teller at the bank said Bradley was a passenger in a white SUV that came through the drive-through. She said when Bradley tried to cash the money order, she told Bradley the money order was forged, kept Bradley’s ID card and contacted her manager. The teller said Bradley got out of the vehicle she was in, asked for her ID back and left on foot, according to the police report.

The teller said Bradley was currently in the Spin City Laundromat, located at 10825 S. U.S. Hwy. 441. She described Bradley as a white female with black leggings, a brown shirt and sores all over her face. Another officer responded to the laundromat and detained Bradley, the report said.

Bradley told the officer she was cashing the money order with permission from the owner, Michelle. She said Michelle must have started making the money order out to someone else before writing over it with the marker. Bradley said Michelle is a friend and she cuts her hair, so Michelle asked her to cash the money order so she could pay her with part of it, according to the report.

Bradley gave the officer to search her purse. During the search, the officer found a used hypodermic needle, and within her wallet was an obviously counterfeit $20 bill and two round blue pills that were later identified as Clonazepam, a Schedule IV controlled substance, the report said.

Bradley said the pills were hers and she had a prescription, but she took them out of the bottle because there were only two left. She said she got the counterfeit $20 from an old lady who asked her to check if it was real or fake, according to the report.

An officer said Bradley was throwing something into the garbage can when he arrived at the laundromat when he arrived. A search of the mostly empty garbage can turned up several more used hypodermic needles, a spoon and a piece of foil. Bradley said she sometimes injects crushed-up pills and said she isn’t usually this sloppy, the report said.

Bradley was taken to the Marion County Jail. When asked again where she got the money order, she said her friend Michelle paid her $60 on Monday to cash a money order for $170, and Michelle was paying her $50 on Tuesday to cash a $300 money order. Bradley said Michelle usually pays the bills with the money orders but used other money orders to pay the bills and wanted to cash the money orders to hide the money from the victim, whose name is Bob, according to the report.

When asked again where she got the fake $20, Bradley said she found it and was going to show her dad. Asked again about the blue pills, she said a friend gave them to her for anxiety. Asked who was in the car with her at the bank, Bradley said his name was Scott but she didn’t know his last name, the report said.

The victim said Michell is living at his residence. He said Michelle and Bradley did not have permission to take the money orders and try to cash them. The victim said the two women were not given the money orders to pay bills and that the money orders were made out for his child support, according to the report.

Bradley, who has been arrested nine previous times since 2011 – mostly on drug charges – is being held on $8,000 bond and will appear in Marion County Court on June 2.
