An Ocala woman who drove off from Wal-Mart in an electric-powered shopping cart was charged with stealing it.
A Marion County sheriff’s deputy responded Tuesday afternoon to a trespassing report at the Stage Stop Motel, 5131 E. Silver Springs Blvd., where the manager asked him to remove 28-year-old Avril Renee Toye from the premises, according to the sheriff’s office report.
The motel manager told the deputy that Toye was in possession of an electric shopping cart from Walmart. When asked if she drove the cart from the Walmart at 4980 E. Silver Springs Blvd. to the motel, Toye said, “I’m handicap and yes I took it,” the report said.
The deputy spoke with a manager at Wal-Mart, who said he wanted to press charges for the theft of the cart. He estimated the value of the cart at $2,000, according to the report.
Toye was charged with grand theft of between $300 and $5,000. She was taken to the Marion County Jail, where she was released Wednesday night on $2,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in Marion County Court in Jan. 12, 2021.
