Two teens arrested by Belleview police officers in connection with fatal shooting of 16-year-old boy

Two teenagers were arrested by Belleview Police Department officers in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy.

On Sunday, April 3, shortly before 7:10 p.m., the Belleview Police Department received a call for service in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival at a residence in the 10400 block of SE 52nd Court, BPD officers located a 16-year-old victim, identified as Christopher Leroy Broad, Jr., who had been shot inside of the residence.

Broad was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to the police department, a detective investigated the shooting and discovered evidence that allegedly pointed to the involvement of 17-year-old Joshua Vining from Belleview.

The police department stated on its Facebook webpage that Vining and Broad appeared to take turns shooting at each other while they both wore a vest which contained a form of body armor. While Broad was wearing the vest, Vining allegedly fired a shot that struck the victim.

During the investigation, 17-year-old Colton Whitler from Ocala was interviewed, and he allegedly provided inaccurate information to investigators regarding what took place on the day of the shooting.

On Thursday, Vining and Whitler were both arrested and transported to Marion County Jail. They are both being charged as adults.

Vining was later released from the jail on $30,000 bond and he is facing a felony charge for aggravated manslaughter of a child with a firearm. Whitler was also released from the jail on $1,000 bond and he is facing a misdemeanor charge for providing false information to law enforcement.

A court date has not been scheduled yet for Vining or Whitler, according to jail records.
