According to OFR, on August 17, 2022, at approximately 8 a.m., a vehicle with four occupants was traveling on U.S. Highway 27 when it was involved in an accident with rollover. The accident resulted in the vehicle catching on fire.

At the time of the accident, two off-duty first responders were traveling along the same road.

OFR Captain Brent Stegall was on his way home from work when he noticed the single-vehicle accident. He quickly stopped to assist the occupants of the vehicle.

Stegall accessed the scene and observed one person outside of the vehicle, which had an active engine compartment fire. There were also three individuals trapped inside the vehicle.

Dixie County EMT Miranda Kilsby also spotted the accident during her commute, and she immediately stopped to offer her assistance.

Stegall and Kilsby were able to successfully remove the three passengers who were trapped inside the vehicle. While the first responding units arrived on scene, Stegall and Kilsby proceeded to triage and conduct rapid trauma assessments.

Ocala Fire Rescue proudly presented the Life Saving Award to Captain Brent Stegall and Dixie County EMT Miranda Kilsby during this week’s city council meeting in recognition of their immediate actions which prevented the vehicle’s occupants from being severely burned or killed.
