Elderly man dead, wife injured after being struck by car at Ocala intersection

An elderly pedestrian who was struck by a car on Thursday evening while crossing an Ocala intersection with his wife has died.

At around 6:40 p.m. on Thursday, Ocala Police Department officers responded to the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and W Silver Springs Boulevard in reference to a vehicle crash involving two elderly pedestrians.

A witness told officers that the car involved in the crash was traveling westbound on E Silver Springs Boulevard and had the green light as the driver approached the intersection.

According to OPD, as the car entered the intersection, the elderly couple – an 89-year-old man and 83-year-old woman – began to cross the roadway from north to south while using the crosswalk.

“The witness advised that the pedestrians were crossing the roadway against the ‘do not walk’ indicator,” stated OPD on its Facebook page.

Moments later, both pedestrians were struck by the car. They were transported to a local hospital, where the elderly man later succumbed to his injuries at around 12:45 p.m. on Friday.

The elderly woman is currently in stable condition.

OPD stated that no speeding or impairment is suspected. No further details were provided as the crash is still under investigation.
