Labeling Kamala Harris ‘black’ is an attempt to secure votes

To the Editor:

Ever since the Obama administration, there has been a misconception out there that frankly ticks me off. And now with Kamala Harris, it’s started all over again.

I’m talking about this narrative that bi-racial people are labeled as “black” by Democrats and Republicans alike. Obama’s mother was white and his father was black, but he’s always listed as the first “black” president, which is totally inaccurate. Kamala’s mother was Indian and her father was black, making her a bi-racial woman; not a black woman.

Even Wikipedia calls them black and that’s just plain wrong. When people use the blanket term “black” to describe bi-racial people, I view them as racists. And that’s because they are essentially saying that the black gene is dominant and that’s just not true. There is no evidence out there to substantiate that claim. And it does a disservice to those who, now or in the future, are truly black and have parents that are both black. And I know that a lot of this labeling is merely to secure the black vote and to me, that’s just pathetic, sad and underhanded!
