A Groveland man was arrested late Thursday night after a violent altercation with his son inside a mini-mart.
A Groveland Police officer who was called to the RaceTrac at 622 E. Broad St. spoke with 67-year-old Worlie Anderson McCoy, who said that he had gotten into the altercation because he believed his son was abusing illegal drugs. McCoy said he had followed his son to the store after he had refused to speak with him earlier, a Groveland Police report states.
McCoy’s son told the officer that his father had “hassled” him all night. He said McCoy followed him into the store and he felt threatened, so he turned to shove him away. But McCoy then struck him in the face twice and they began to wrestle on the ground inside the store, the report says.
After watching video surveillance footage from the store that showed McCoy following his son and pointing his finger at him, followed by the altercation, the officer took a sworn statement from a RaceTrac employee. McCoy’s son then refused to prosecute his father and claimed he didn’t recall what happened.
McCoy was taken into custody and transported to the Lake County Jail, where he was charged with battery. He was released Friday at 5 p.m. on $3,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in a Lake County courtroom on Sept. 12 at 8 a.m. to answer to the charge.
