Passenger killed when Ocala man’s car slams into I-4 overpass

A woman was killed Wednesday morning when a car crashed into an Interstate 4 overpass in Polk County.

The crash, which is being investigated as an alcohol-related incident, occurred just before 11:30 a.m. on I-4 when a 2008 Dodge Charger driven by 63-year-old Danny Ray O’Connell traveled up the embankment of the entrance ramp to County Road 557 and collided with the overpass, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

The woman, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, died at the scene of the crash. O’Connell, of Ocala, and another passenger in the car, 67-year-old Daniel Carlucci, of Holly Hill, sustained serious injuries and were transported to Lakeland Regional Hospital.

Both O’Connell and the woman were wearing their seatbelts, while Carlucci was not, the FHP report says, adding that charges are pending.
