Deputy called to school after fifth-grader punches younger girl on school bus

A Marion County sheriff’s deputy was called Monday after an official at Romeo Elementary School in Dunnellon learned of a fight on a school bus.

The dean at the school, located at 19550 SW 36th St., told the deputy that a fifth-grader apparently had hit a second-grader while they were riding a school bus. Several students gave the dean conflicting stories of what happened, but the fifth-grader did admit to hitting the girl in the hip area.

The deputy spoke with the girl’s father, who said he didn’t want law enforcement action if the school was going to handle appropriate disciplinary action.

The deputy also was present when a school official spoke to the boy’s guardian via a Spanish interpreter. The guardian was told that the student was being suspended for five days and she assured the school she would handle the situation at home, adding that the fifth-grader “probably will be moving out of the area to live with an aunt.”
