Man killed Saturday in Ocala shooting incident had extensive criminal record

Donell Leon Dewese

A man who was shot Saturday in an incident on N Magnolia Avenue has died.

Ocala Police officers scrambled to the scene of the shooting late Saturday afternoon and when they arrived, both the shooter and the victim, later identified as 44-year-old Donell Leon Dewese, were still in the premises. The shooter surrendered his weapon and cooperated with the investigation, a police report states.

Dewese, believed to be living in Citra and a former Ocala resident, was trauma alerted to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds, the report says. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and no charges have been filed, pending a case review with the State Attorney’s Office.

Dewese was no stranger to the Marion County legal system, having been in the jail five times since May 2014. His latest arrest came on March 5, 2018, when he was charged with fraud for filing a false statement to obtain re-employment assistance, possession of marijuana not more than 20 grams, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, fleeing/eluding police and a warrant for failure to appear in court on a hit-and-run case involving property damage. Dewese served 44 days in the Marion County Jail in relation to those charges.

In his other four arrests, Dewese faced charges of making a false report or giving false information to police, failure to stop regarding a crash with injury, failure to obtain a motor vehicle registration, battery and domestic battery, jail records show.
