Belligerent Ocala woman refuses breathalyzer test after injury crash on SR 200

Maria E. Lugo

An Ocala woman who was involved in an accident failed a field sobriety test, refused to provide a breath sample and got mouthy with the arresting officer while being taken to the Marion County Jail on Tuesday.

According to the Ocala Police Department report, a 2004 Buick SUV driven by 59-year-old Maria E. Lugo, of 10 Pine Terrace, rear-ended a black 2009 Toyota at a high speed along the 5400 block of State Road 200. The Toyota flipped and rolled through a fence.

The driver of the Toyota was treated for a large hematoma under her left eye and lacerations to her left hand and fingers. She also complained of pain in her left shoulder and arm. No further information about her condition was available, an Ocala Police report says.

The officer caught up with Lugo down the road at a gas station, where she was still seated behind the wheel of her vehicle. The officer reported he could smell an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle, the report says.

Because Lugo does not speak English, another officer translated for her. She indicated she understood the officers were going to perform field sobriety tests as part of an investigation for impaired driving. Lugo failed each exercise and then refused to take a breathalyzer test, the report says.

Lugo was arrested and charged with driving under the influence with personal injury to another person. The officer reported she became argumentative and belligerent when placed in the backseat of his patrol vehicle and cursed at him on the way to jail. Once at the jail, she again refused to provide a breath sample.

Lugo remains in jail on $2,000 bond. Her next appearance in Marion County Court is scheduled for May 17.
