Ocala couple seriously injured in hit-and-run crash involving pickup truck

An Ocala couple was seriously injured Sunday night when they were involved in a hit-and-run crash.

Anselmo Barreto, 68, and Maria Barreto, 60, were transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center after the incident, which happened shortly after 7 p.m. at the intersection of Pine Road and Pine Trace in Ocala, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

The crash took place when a red Ford Escape driven by Anselmo Barreto was traveling southbound on Pine Road and crossing through the intersection with Pine Trace. Witnesses reported that a black pickup truck traveling eastbound on Pine Trace ran through a stop sign and collided with Barreto’s vehicle, forcing it to overturn. The pickup then fled the scene and continued eastbound on Pine Trace, the report says.

Multiple witnesses stated that the pickup involved in the crash might have been a Ford F-150 and had furniture in its bed. The truck should have damage to its front bumper and possibly tinted headlights, the report says, adding that pieces of the hit-and-run vehicle were recovered at the scene of the crash.
