Recently freed Ocala woman fights deputies on way back to jail

Angel Larose Tillis

An Ocala woman charged last month with pulling a knife on a woman who was trying to evict her is back behind bars after being accused of battering a man and spraying him with pepper spray, fighting with deputies who were arresting her, and trying to smuggle a drug pipe into jail in her bra.

Angel Larose Tillis, 20, was charged April 1 with simple battery, battery on an officer, resisting an officer without violence, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug equipment, and smuggling contraband into a detention facility. Her bond was also revoked from her March 2 arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The woman who reported the incident told Marion County sheriff’s deputies that Tillis had battered her grandson. She said this wasn’t the first time this kind of incident had taken place, and that about a month ago, while at the Wal-Mart store in Silver Springs Shores, she returned to her vehicle to find the victim with a bloody nose. She said the victim told her that Tillis had punched him and fled on foot, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The victim said he and Tillis arrived back home in his grandmother’s vehicle and got into an argument over the victim smoking the last cigarette. He said he was in the driver’s seat and Tillis was in the front passenger seat when she became outraged and punched him with a closed fist on the top of his head about three times and grabbed his long hair, the report said.

The victim said he struck Tillis in the top of her head in self-defense. He said he got out of the car and was reaching into the rear-left door when Tillis sprayed him in the face and chest area with pepper spray. The victim said he ran into the home while Tillis fled on foot. A deputy observed the victim’s face and chest area were red, and his left eye was somewhat puffy, according to the report.

Another deputy spotted Tillis at the intersection of Pine and Bahia roads and brought her back to the incident location. Tillis said she “may” have struck the victim in his head and she admitted to pepper spraying him. After being told she was being placed under arrest and to place her hands behind her back, Tillis resisted somewhat while being handcuffed, the report said.

Tillis then started to actively resist while being walked to the patrol car. She dropped to the ground and twisted and tensed her body to avoid being placed in the rear seat of the vehicle. After a struggle, she was placed in the vehicle, but she pushed her feet into door jamb, preventing the deputy from closing the door, according to the report.

At that point deputies tried to place Tillis in a hobble, and she continued to resist by tensing her body, flailing her legs and refusing to cooperate. A deputy administered a pressure point behind Tillis’ right ear and ordered her several times to stop resisting. She kicked on deputy in the chest and wrapped her legs around another deputy’s legs while tensing her body. Deputies were finally able to place Tillis in the hobble after threatening to tase her if she didn’t comply, the report said.

At the Marion County Jail, deputy removed a black and silver pipe from Tillis’ bra. There was residue on one end of the pipe, which the deputy recognized as being an item commonly used to smoke marijuana. Tillis continued to resist in the booking area and had to be pepper sprayed, according to the report.

While searching the back seat of the patrol vehicle, the deputy found two glass pipes, an empty red canister, and a small amount of a hard, crystal-like substance that tested positive for methamphetamine, the report said.

Tillis is being held on $12,000 bond and will appear in Marion County Court on May 5.
