COVID-19 claims 2 more Marion County residents as local cases continue to rise

Two more Marion County residents have died of COVID-19 as the virus continues to make its way across Ocala and the rest of the tri-county area.

The two fatalities were identified as a 66-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman, both of whom tested positive on July 6. Both hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with other Coronavirus patients, according to a report released Wednesday by the Florida Department of Health.

Marion County is reporting 2,826 cases – an increase of 105. Those are comprised of 1,307 men, 1,490 women, eight non-residents and 21 people listed as unknown. There have been 35 deaths and 273 people have been hospitalized.

The overwhelming majority of Marion County cases – 2,082 – have been reported in Ocala. Others have been identified in Summerfield (162), Belleview (142), Dunnellon (105), Citra (39), Reddick (33), Silver Springs (34), Ocklawaha (31), Weirsdale (20), Anthony (15), Fort McCoy (6), Orange Lake (4), Candler (3), East Lake (3), Lowell (3), The Villages (2), Sparr (1) and Morriston (1).

The tri-county area is now reporting 7,301 cases – an increase of 248 from Tuesday to Wednesday – among 3,466 men, 3,710 women, 40 non-residents and 85 people listed as unknown. There have been 92 deaths and 582 people have been hospitalized.

Sumter County is now reporting 881 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 22 in a 24-hour period – among 477 men, 390 women, seven non-residents and seven people listed as unknown. The number of deaths was decreased by one to 21 on Wednesday, with 131 people requiring some form of hospital care.

The Villages continues to lead Sumter County with 299 cases, followed by Bushnell with 186. Of those 126 are at the Sumter Correctional Institution among 103 inmates and 23 staff members. Others have been identified in Wildwood (136), Oxford (53), Lake Panasoffkee (43), Webster (37), Center Hill (29), Coleman (29), Lady Lake portion of the county (20) and Sumterville (14). The federal prison in Coleman also is reporting 330 cases among 258 inmates and 72 staff members.

Lake County continues to lead the local area with 3,594 cases – an increase of 121 in 24 hours – among 1,682 men, 1,830 women, 25 non-residents and 57 people listed as unknown. There have been 36 deaths and 178 people hospitalized.

Clermont continues to pace Lake County with 925 cases – an increase of 38 in 24 hours. Others have been reported in Tavares (486, 24 of which are at the Lake County Jail among six inmates, 16 staff members and two contracted nurses), Leesburg (508), Eustis (311), Groveland (254), Mount Dora (235), Mascotte (132), Lady Lake (114), Minneola (103), Sorrento (91), Montverde (71), Umatilla (63), Fruitland Park (48), Grand Island (35), Howey-in-the-Hills (27), Astor (24), The Villages (20), Astatula (19), Yalaha (14), Altoona (13), Paisley (12), Okahumpka (11), Ferndale (3) and Mount Plymouth (3).

All told, Florida is reporting 379,619 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 9,785 from Tuesday to Wednesday. Of those, 374,920 are residents. There have been 5,459 deaths and 22,243 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State. Those numbers show 140 more deaths since Tuesday and an additional 463 people requiring hospital care.
