MCPS Principal appointed to serve on Department of Education task force

A Marion County Public Schools principal has been selected to serve on a new Florida Department of Education task force.

Oakcrest Elementary Principal Christine Sandy was appointed by the Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives Chris Sprowls to serve on the Florida Department of Education’s (DOE) Task Force on Closing the Achievement Gap for Boys on July 1.

Principal Sandy was recommended for appointment by Roseann Fricks, the executive director of the Early Learning Coalition of Marion County, Inc.

After many years with the district, Sandy has served Marion County Public Schools in various roles and apart from being the principal of Oakcrest Elementary, she has also led as the principal of Reddick-Collier Elementary and Dunnellon Middle School.

Sandy was also founder of the Building Better Dads program with the Marion County Children’s Alliance. The non-profit was developed as a fatherhood initiative that helped mentor fathers and establish relationships in their children’s lives.

The Task Force on Closing the Achievement Gap for Boys was established to make recommendations to the DOE, the Governor, and the Legislature. Recommendations will include a variety of topics impacting young men, including academic, behavioral, and mental health support.
