A man who has been convicted of five previous shoplifting thefts was arrested for attempting to shoplift from a Walmart in southwest Ocala.
On Saturday, August 21, around 10:30 p.m., an officer with the Ocala Police Department was dispatched to the Walmart located at 2600 SW 19th Avenue Road in reference to an alleged retail theft in progress.
Upon arriving, the officer made contact with a Walmart Asset Protection Officer who advised that 57-year-old Richard Papesh was observed through video surveillance “selecting several articles of women’s underwear and sticking them in his pants and in his pockets,” according to a report from the Ocala Police Department.
The OPD officer says that he was able to observe Papesh using “deceptive techniques” in order to conceal women’s underwear under his clothing and leave the establishment. The OPD officer and the Asset Protection Officer made contact with Papesh and prevented him from leaving the establishment.
According to the report, the total value of all the clothing recovered from Papesh was $130 before taxes.
Papesh, who was previously trespassed from the Walmart, was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail. He is being charged with felony retail theft and trespassing after warning. He is next due in court on Tuesday, September 21, according to jail records.
