Marion County Public Schools report decrease in COVID-19 cases, quarantines

Marion County Public Schools reported 367 positive cases of COVID-19 and 1,161 students quarantines during the last week of school (September 4 to September 10).

The new COVID-19 report was released Monday and shows that during the last week of school, 367 positive cases of COVID-19 were reported. Of the cases, 324 were students and 43 were employees. The week prior, a total of 539 COVID-19 cases were reported.

A total of 1,161 students and employees were quarantined last week, compared with 2,027 quarantines the week before.

Last week’s numbers represent a stark decrease from the beginning of the school year. Three weeks ago, Marion County Public Schools reported over 730 positive COVID-19 cases and 3,400 quarantines.

The current report shows that at least 55 schools and district departments reported positive cases over the week, including two dozen elementary schools.

The report also shows that approximately 22%, or 9,187 students, have face covering opt-outs on file with the school district.
