HCA Florida Ocala Hospital named to 2022 Fortune/Merative’s 100 Top Hospitals list

For the fifth time, HCA Florida Ocala Hospital (previously Ocala Regional Medical Center) has been named to the annual Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals list.

Merative, a data, analytics, and technology partner for the health industry, identified the top hospitals after a thorough evaluation of 2,650 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in the United States.

The annual list, which is published by Fortune, recognizes excellence in clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience, and financial health. Merative (formerly IBM Watson Health) established the list to help identify best practices that may help other healthcare organizations achieve consistent, balanced, and sustainable high performance.

The 2022 Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals list recognizes HCA Florida Ocala Hospital as being one of the top teaching hospitals in the United States.

“It is a great honor to be recognized as one of the nation’s top teaching hospitals,” said Chad Christianson, Chief Executive Officer of HCA Florida Ocala Hospital.

Christianson added, “We take pride in the residency programs we’ve built, and this recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our talented team at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital.”

The Graduate Medical Education residency program at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, which was established in 2015, is a partnership with the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. The program began with 16 residents and two programs, and has grown to develop 159 residents per academic year in eight distinct training programs at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital.

Those programs include internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, general surgery, pre-anesthesiology, anesthesiology, orthopedics, and surgical critical care fellowship.

Darwin Ang, HCA Florida Ocala Hospital Graduate Medical Education Medical Director of General Surgery, said, “Our general surgery residency program has managed to graduate with a 100 percent pass rate, placing our graduates in competitive fields. Our operative volume is considered high, as are the acuity and complexity of our patients.”

Ang continued by stating, “This couldn’t be possible without the support of both HCA Healthcare and the University of Central Florida. We have the resources to teach, perform research, and render outstanding clinical care.”

According to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, being recognized as one of the Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals demonstrates the hospital’s ongoing commitment to prioritize patient-centered care.

The hospitals included on the Top 100 list had better results on key clinical and operational performance indicators, according to Merative. These include survival rates, patient complications, healthcare associated infections, 30-day mortality and 30-day hospital-wide readmission rates, length of stay, throughput in emergency departments, inpatient expenses, profitability, and ratings from patients.

The Fortune/Merative list also incorporates a community health measure into its ranking process, which is weighted equally with other ranking measures. For the community health measure, hospitals were surveyed across the following components:

  • Assessing hospital contributions to community health as a provider of critical services for community health and preventive care.
  • Identifying ways that hospitals contribute to community health as a community partner teaming up with local organizations to implement critical programs.
  • Focusing on ways that hospitals promote community health through their practices as anchor institutions supporting local economic and social progress.
