‘Walk Your Child to School Day’ to take place in Ocala on October 5

The Marion County Community Traffic Safety Team is hosting an event this week to help educate students and their families about several hazardous scenarios that can be encountered while walking to school.

Thousands of students in Marion County walk to school each day. In recognition of National Walk to School Day, Marion County Public Schools is inviting Maplewood Elementary School students and their families to participate in a “Walk Your Child to School Day” event on Wednesday, October 5.

According to MCPS, students and families will gather at Shocker Park (2371 SE 44th Court in Ocala), and walking will begin at 6:30 a.m. Participants will walk along SE 24th Street to Maplewood Elementary School.

Participating children will walk in groups led by local law enforcement officers, Marion County Public Schools’ staff, and community volunteers. During the walk, the groups will discuss topics that include pedestrian safety, physical activity, and the environment.

MCPS encourages parents to participate by walking with their children, along with local city and county dignitaries, private and government representatives, and Maplewood Elementary teachers and staff members.
