Ocala art teacher wins statewide award

An art teacher from Hillcrest School in Ocala was recognized with a statewide award earlier this month at the Florida Art Education Association’s annual conference.

Zanita Hendry, an 11-year veteran with Marion County Public Schools and a current art teacher at Hillcrest, captured the 2023 “Adaptive Arts Educator Award” during the conference, which was held on October 5 through October 8 at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort and Spa in Ponte Vedra Beach.

This award is given to one Florida Art Education Association member who has “served students with distinction.” According to FAEA, Hendry also received the honor because she “believes, supports, and helps to define the development and implementation of inclusive visual arts practices in the field.”

Hendry earned her Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Florida, and she has taught at Hillcrest since 2016. She currently works with 170 students, encouraging them while developing their individual art skills and talents.
