On Tuesday, February 27, at around 4 p.m., Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 16800 block of NE 41st Court in Citra in reference to shots being fired in the area. Upon arrival, they located a deceased woman, later identified as Stafford.

The victim had sustained apparent fatal gunshot wounds, according to the sheriff’s office.

MCSO Major Crimes detectives arrived on scene and conducted an extensive search of the surrounding area. The sheriff’s office stated that during this search, an abandoned vehicle belonging to Vereen was found.

Detectives were unable to locate Vereen. However, at around 9:45 p.m. on February 27, MCSO received a call from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in Jesup, Georgia, and they advised that Vereen had “walked into their station to turn himself in.”

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office arrested Vereen on warrants for several charges unrelated to the fatal shooting in Citra, and he was held at the Wayne County Jail until his recent extradition to Marion County.

Vereen is being charged with murder in the first degree with a firearm, possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, and tampering with evidence in a criminal proceeding.

A court date has not been scheduled yet, according to Marion County Jail records.
