Pre-apprenticeship program expanded for students at Marion high school

School officials are currently negotiating a new partnership with the Academy of Construction Technologies to enable students at a local high school to learn from local experts while working on Marion County construction projects as early as this September.

Marion County Public Schools announced a new partnership with the Academy of Construction Technologies (ACT), which is based in Orlando, earlier this month.

Late last year, MCPS submitted an application to ACT. That application was approved and MCPS is currently in contract negotiations with ACT, according to school officials.

Once finalized, the contract will provide pre-apprenticeship opportunities to students at Lake Weir High School in Ocala. That pre-apprenticeship program will feed directly into the electrical apprenticeship program at Marion Technical College, according to MCPS.

School officials believe the program, the first of its kind in the county, will help local construction organizations meet their need for skilled workers.

The new partnership is the result of the combined efforts of MCPS and CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion, among other organizations.
