A 76-year-old Ocala man died on Tuesday morning after he was struck by a pickup truck while riding a bicycle on SE Maricamp Road.
The accident took place at around 6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, August 6, near the intersection of SE Maricamp Road and Lake Road in Silver Springs Shores, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP stated that the pickup truck was traveling westbound on SE Maricamp Road, east of the Lake Road intersection, in the outside lane.
The elderly Ocala man was heading westbound on the same roadway while riding his bicycle on the paved shoulder. According to the report, he “suddenly swerved” into the outside lane, which placed him in the direct path of the pickup truck.
As a result, the right front corner of the pickup truck collided with the bicycle and its rider.
The driver and sole occupant of the pickup truck, a 31-year-old Ocala man, stopped his vehicle on the shoulder after the crash. He was not injured.
Due to the impact from the collision, the bicyclist was “propelled” toward the grassy shoulder, where he came to a final rest. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A trooper noted in the report that the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The names of the individuals involved in the accident were not released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
