Dear Editor,

As a concerned parent and community member, I believe it’s time we rethink the current educational practices in Marion County schools, particularly regarding traditional homework and the heavy focus on standardized test preparation.

Excessive homework is causing unnecessary stress for our children and taking away valuable time that could be spent on family activities, hobbies, and rest. Many of us have seen firsthand how this overload diminishes our kids’ enthusiasm for learning.

Moreover, the overemphasis on standardized tests is narrowing the curriculum and stifling creativity. When teaching is centered around test scores, our children miss out on opportunities to develop critical thinking skills and explore subjects in meaningful ways.

Our world has changed, and our approach to education should evolve with it. We need to move towards a system that emphasizes quality learning experiences over rote memorization and test preparation. A balanced approach that fosters creativity, problem-solving, and a genuine love of learning will better prepare our children for the future.

I urge the Marion County School Board to reconsider these outdated practices and lead the way in implementing more progressive educational strategies that truly benefit our students.

I’ve also started a petition for those parents who would like to see the change.

Sincerely,
Steve Binegar
