HCA Florida Ocala hospital

An investigation is underway after a Florida Highway Patrol trooper shot and killed a suspect at an Ocala hospital early Friday morning.

According to the Ocala Police Department, officers responded to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital (1431 SE 1st Avenue in Ocala) at around 2:50 a.m. on Friday, January 24, to assist an FHP trooper who was involved in a physical altercation with a suspect in custody.

During that altercation, the trooper fatally shot the suspect. The identity of the suspect has not been released.

“No law enforcement officers or hospital staff were injured,” said OPD in a media release on Friday morning.

At the request of FHP, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the trooper-involved shooting.

No further details were provided by law enforcement regarding the shooting incident or what led to the altercation that preceded it.
