Residents and motorists near the Ocala National Forest may hear loud booms and see increased wildlife activity this week, as the U.S. Navy resumes training exercises at the Pinecastle Range Complex.
According to a press release from Naval Air Station Jacksonville, bombing schedules indicate that testing will begin tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 10, and continue through Saturday, Feb. 14. The exercises will include the use of both live and inert ordnance.
The schedule for the training is as follows:
- Monday, Feb. 9: 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Inert) and 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. (Live/Inert)
- Tuesday, Feb. 10: 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. (Inert) and 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. (Live/Inert)
- Thursday, Feb. 12: 1:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (Live/Inert)
- Friday, Feb. 13: 1:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (Live/Inert)
- Saturday, Feb. 14: 2:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. (Live/Inert)
Officials warn that the loud noise and vibrations from the bombing often temporarily displace wildlife, pushing animals out of the forest and onto nearby roadways. Motorists are urged to use extra caution when driving through the Ocala National Forest and surrounding areas during these times.
Additionally, homeowners in the area are advised to secure any items around their residence that could attract wildlife. Residents should be mindful of larger animals, including black bears, and are encouraged to practice “BearWise” measures to prevent conflicts.
The Pinecastle Range Complex is the only place on the East Coast where the Navy is authorized to train with live explosive air-to-ground ordnance.
