Hit-and-run crash leaves Belleview bicyclist with severe arm injuries

A hit-and-run crash Friday afternoon in Alachua County left a Belleview bicyclist seriously injured.

Daniel Bocca, 49, of Belleview, was seriously injured in Alachua County on Friday when he was hit by a van while riding his bicycle on U.S. 301.

Daniel Bocca, 49, was riding south on U.S. 301 on the right shoulder/bike lane near SE 22nd Lane shortly before 6 p.m. when he was struck by a maroon-colored passenger van that also was traveling south. The van’s right side collided with Bocca, resulting in severe injuries to his left arm, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

Witnesses told an FHP trooper that when they turned around and went back to the scene, they saw an older-model maroon passenger van with a license plate that was possibly red and white, the report says, adding that the vehicle will have damage to its right side and will be missing the passenger-side mirror.

Bocca, who wasn’t wearing a helmet, was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville in serious condition. Charges are pending in the incident, the FHP report says.

FHP officials are asking anyone with information about the maroon van and/or its driver to contact the FHP or Crime Stoppers of Alachua County at (352) 372-STOP (7867).
