Sinkhole snarls traffic on State Road 40 near Interstate 75 in Ocala

This sinkhole, which appeared on State Road 40 on Friday morning, is believed to have been caused by a sewer main break.

A sinkhole opened up in the pavement on State Road 40 in Ocala on Friday morning, causing a traffic nightmare for many who were trying to get to work or do some final Christmas shopping.

The sinkhole, which is located just west of Interstate 75, is believed to have been caused by a sewer main break. Crews from Ocala Public Works and the Department of Transportation were on scene shortly after the problem was first reported, as were officers from the Ocala Police Department.

The sinkhole is expected to keep the section of the westbound lane closed for approximately 12-15 hours, officials said.
