Ocklawaha man charged with dating violence after dispute over cell phone

Jason Johns

An Ocklawaha man spent Monday night in the Marion County Jail after being accused of holding a woman against her will.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence on Southeast 129th Lane, where they found Jason Ellis Johns, 22, and the victim arguing outside. Johns told the deputies they had been arguing all day and that when the victim wanted to leave, he didn’t want her to go and told her, “If you leave, I’m going to kill myself.”

Johns said when the victim tried to walk out of the bedroom door, he wrapped his arms around to prevent her from leaving. He said then let her go and she left the residence.

The victim told deputies she and Johns were in the bedroom together when Johns wanted to see her cell phone and she refused to give it to him. She said they were arguing when Johns showed her his shotgun and said, “Let’s go right now. I’ll kill him.”

The victim said she went to leave the room when Johns wrapped his arms around her and wouldn’t release her, despite her repeatedly telling him to let her go. She said she told Johns she needed to use the bathroom and he allowed her to leave the bedroom but followed her into the bathroom. The victim said she went outside the residence as soon as she used the bathroom.

Johns was arrested and charged with battery and dating violence. He was released Tuesday on $500 bond. His next appearance in Marion County Court is set for March 26.
