Umatilla man charged with strangling woman in argument over car

Michael Shane Boles

An Umatilla man was jailed on a domestic battery charge after he allegedly strangled a woman during an argument about his vehicle.

Michael Shane Boles, 38, of Southeast 151st Street, remains in the Marion County Jail on $2,000 bond after the incident, which took place Sunday at a friend’s home on Southeast 142nd Place.

The victim told a Marion County Sheriff’s deputy the confrontation started earlier in the day over Boles’ vehicle and continued at the friend’s home, with Boles becoming more and more irate with her. She said she and Boles walked off property, where he became aggressive towards her. The victim said Boles grabbed her around the neck with both hands and squeezed, restricting her ability to breathe.

The deputy observed a small red mark on the left side of the victim’s neck.

Boles told the deputy he and the victim had been arguing but he said he did not choke – or even touch – her. Both residents of the home where the incident occurred said they did not witness a physical altercation, but they could Boles and the victim yelling at each other outside the home.

Boles, who was charged with domestic battery by strangulation, is scheduled to appear in Marion County Court on April 23.
