Phone-grabbing Ocala woman behind bars after boyfriend punched in groin

Karris Costic

An argument over a vehicle escalated quickly when a man reported being punched in the groin while trying to get his phone back from an angry Ocala woman.

When an Ocala Police officer arrived the couple’s home on Tuesday, the victim said that he and his live-in girlfriend of eight months, 19-year-old Karris Costic, had gotten into an argument when she made sarcastic remarks about his parents purchasing him a car. He said he got tired of arguing so he put on headphones and started watching videos on his phone, a police report states.

The victim said he had hoped to avoid any more issues with Costic, but she became upset that he wasn’t listening to her so she grabbed a pair of scissors and cut the headphones while he was using them. He said he then took the damaged headphones off and started playing the video out loud but Costic snatched his phone out of his hands and wouldn’t return it, the report says.

The victim said he attempted to get his phone back by reaching around his girlfriend’s body while she had her back to him and the phone tucked into her stomach. He said Costic then hit him in the groin area and he reacted by striking her on her side and pushing her away, the report says.

Costic admitted that the couple was arguing about a vehicle but said her boyfriend was being “belligerent” toward her. She claimed he started ignoring her when she was “trying to talk to him and settle things.” And she confirmed that she got upset when he wasn’t paying attention to her and she grabbed his phone, the report says.

Costic also admitted to punching her boyfriend in his genitals as he was “grabbing her trying to get his phone back.” She said he hit her back on the side of her body. And she confirmed cutting the headphones off her boyfriend “because they belonged to her and she did not want him using them to ignore her,” the report says.

The officer said he didn’t see injuries to either Costic or her boyfriend. And he added that EMS was called but both refused treatment.

Costic was arrested and transported to the Marion County Jail, where she was charged with simple domestic battery. She was being held on $500 bond and is due in a Marion County courtroom on May 13 at 1 p.m. to answer to the charge.
