A Fort McCoy woman who lied about her identity to a Marion County sheriff’s deputy was jailed Sunday morning.

The deputy responded to a residence in the 13300 block of NE 228th Lane after receiving reports that 46-year-old Bernadine Lea Cardy, of Fort McCoy, was there. When the deputy arrived, he made contact with a woman, who said her name was Dawn Marie Locke. She told the deputy her birthday was Dec. 14, 1972 but couldn’t provide any part of a Social Security number to help in confirming her identify. And the woman claimed to have a Florida driver’s license and had never had a different last name, a sheriff’s office report states.

No records were found for the name and date of birth the woman provided. The deputy then compared a jail booking photograph he had of Cardy to the woman and determined that they were the same person, the report says.

After confirming that Cardy was wanted on an extraditable warrant out of Putnam County, he placed her under arrest and said he would confirm her identity at the Marion County Jail utilizing a fingerprint scanner. Once Cardy was secured in the deputy’s patrol vehicle, she said she “wished to tell the truth now” and admitted who she was. She said she had attempted to conceal her identity because of the outstanding warrant for a probation violation.

Cardy, who lives at 12490 E Hwy. 318 in Fort McCoy and has been in the jail 13 times since October 2003, was charged with giving false identification to a law enforcement officer. She’s due in court Sept. 25 to answer to the charge.
