Man stopped for not having license arrested on drug and weapon charges

Johnny Isaiah Goodfella

A Summerfield man was arrested last week after drugs and an illegal firearm were found in his vehicle.

Johnny Isaiah Goodfella, 37, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving with a suspended license.

Goodfella was stopped by an Ocala Police officer Thursday night for not having a valid driver’s license. Earlier in the day, the officer made contact with Goodfella at Dick’s Sporting Goods in reference to a suspicious incident, and Goodfella said he didn’t have a license. He told the officer he and his family were waiting for a taxi. At the same time, Goodfella’s daughter told another officer their vehicle was parked at Barnes & Noble, according to the OPD report.

The officers drove past Barnes & Noble and saw Goodfella’s vehicle parked in front of the business. They waited to see if Goodfella was going back to the vehicle. About 10 minutes later, the officers saw Goodfella and his family enter the vehicle and drive out of the parking lot, the report said.

The officers initiated a traffic stop and Goodfella was detained and placed in the patrol car. Meanwhile, an officer observed Goodfella’s wife reaching between the seat and door panel. The officers asked Goodfella’s wife to step out of the vehicle and when she did, a Styrofoam cup fell out onto the ground. Inside the cup was a glass pipe that Goodfella’s wife said belonged to her husband, according to the report.

When asked if the pipe was his, Goodfella said it was and that he gave it to his wife to hide. When asked if there were any drugs in the vehicle before officers searched it, he said there shouldn’t be, the report said.

Because Goodfella’s children were still in the vehicle, officers waited until their grandmother arrived to get them before starting the search. Officers located two small plastic bags containing a light brown powdery substance, a baggie with a black tar substance and a semi-burnt pen cap, a bag with a crystal rock-like substance, and another glass pipe, according to the report.

An officer asked Goodfella about the items that were found and he said everything in the vehicle belonged to him. When asked what the substances were, Goodfella said it was all heroin, the report said.

Goodfella was taken to the Marion County Jail while another officer continued to search the vehicle and found a handgun in the trunk, a small cylinder container containing a green leafy substance, and a package of red unmarked pills. All of the narcotics were field tested and identified as heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana. Residue in the pipes tested positive for heroin, according to the report.

Goodfella, who has previously convicted for possession of marijuana in Oregon in 2013, was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released Saturday on $22,500 bond. He’ll appear in Marion County Court on Nov. 5.
