Often-arrested Anthony man popped for DUI and fleeing deputies

Spencer Sean Hickey

An Anthony man with 17 prior arrests is back in the Marion County Jail after trying to flee from deputies and then refusing to submit to field sobriety and breath tests.

Spencer Sean Hickey, 44, of 4409 NE 137th St., was charged with DUI (fourth or subsequent offense), knowingly driving with a suspended license, fleeing a law-enforcement officer with lights and siren active, and a probation violation.

Jail records show Hickey with 17 previous arrests on charges including DUI, hit-and-run, battery, child abuse, fleeing and eluding, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, reckless driving, burglary, assault, domestic battery, auto theft, disorderly conduct, aggravated domestic stalking, and possession of stolen property.

Marion County sheriff’s deputies responded Tuesday to a report of a silver Cadillac following a woman. A deputy located the vehicle driving southbound at the intersection of Jacksonville Road and North U.S. Highway 441. The deputy activated emergency lights and sirens, but the vehicle continued southbound, according to the sheriff’s office report.

The vehicle cut through the parking lot of a tire shop at North Highway 441 and NW 10th Street and continued to accelerate away. Another deputy joined the chase and helped pullover the vehicle at the 1400 block of NW 10th Street, the report said.

The driver, identified as Hickey, was taken into custody. He was very unbalanced on his feet and had red bloodshot eyes. He was slurring his words and the deputy could smell the odor of alcohol on his breath. In the center console, next to the driver’s seat, was an open can of Four Loko with about three-quarters of the beverage missing, according to the report.

Hickey showed various mood swings between cooperative and aggressive. He had a Florida ID card in his wallet, which he knew was not a valid license. His license was suspended indefinitely on Feb. 3 for failure to pay financial obligations, the report said.

Hickey was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he refused to complete field sobriety exercises and a breath test. He also refused to sign the implied consent form. He’s being held on $10,500 bond and will appear in Marion County Jail on May 19.
