A Belleview man who spent 17 days in jail for a probation violation last month is back behind bars after he allegedly fled from law enforcement and resisted arrest on charges of driving with a suspended license and possession of drug equipment.
Jacob Anthony Pond, 30, of 10064 S.E. 126th Lane, was arrested Monday after a Marion County sheriff’s deputy observed him not wearing his seat belt when stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of S.E. 115th Avenue and S.E. 132nd Place.
While the deputy tried to make a U-turn to conduct a traffic stop, Pond turned westbound onto S.E. 132nd Place in his black Dodge Neon and accelerated rapidly. The deputy turned on the marked patrol vehicle’s emergency lights and the vehicle continued to accelerate as it traveled westbound on S.E. 132nd Avenue. Radar measured the vehicle’s speed at 72 mph, according to the sheriff’s office report.
The deputy followed the vehicle as it turned northbound onto S.E. 105th Court and eastbound on S.E. 130th Place before losing sight of it. Another deputy found the vehicle empty in the 10300 block of S.E. 126th Lane and later observed a white male with reddish-blonde matching Pond’s description along with a female that matched the description of his passenger walking southbound at the intersection of S.E. 100th Avenue and S.E. 130th Court, according to the report.
Pond was taken into custody and positively identified by the first deputy as the man behind the wheel of the vehicle. After being read his Miranda warning, Pond said he was not driving the vehicle and he denied ever being in it. He said he just left his house on S.E. 126th Lane, which is within two blocks of where he was picked up, the report said.
A records check showed Pond’s license was suspended on June 27 and he was labeled a habitual offender in January 2018. A search of the vehicle turned up a black cylindrical tube that had the letters “CA” and a marijuana symbol on it. Inside the tube was a vape pen that didn’t have a cartridge in it. The vape pen had a small amount of an amber-colored substance in the area where the cartridge attaches. The deputy recognized the substance was consistent with marijuana and the amber-color substance tested positive for THC, according to the report.
After placing Pond in the back of the patrol car, the deputy opened the door to speak with him. Pond grew agitated when told he was being arrested and put his knee against the door to keep it from closing. He received multiple verbal commands to move his knee, which he didn’t do. The deputy tried to move Pond out of the doorway and he actively resisted. He tried to get out of the patrol vehicle but was unsuccessful, the report said.
Pond is being held in the Marion County Jail on $5,000 bond and is due to appear in Marion County Court on Dec. 29.
