Ocala man accused of theft and toilet papering trees

Derrick Jarvarious Taylor

An Ocala man was arrested after he allegedly stole items from his ex-girlfriend’s landlord and threw toilet paper into the trees in the yard.

Derrick Jarvarious Taylor, 29, of 2820 NE 4th Court, was charged Tuesday with first-degree petit theft less than $750 and criminal mischief with less than $200 in damage after the incident, which happened at the victim’s residence on NE 16th Court.

Taylor’s former girlfriend told a Marion County sheriff’s deputy that she and Taylor got into a verbal argument on Monday about his jealousy and how he had been treating her. She said she told him to leave the property, and he walked outside and waited for a ride, according to the sheriff’s office report.

Taylor’s ex-girlfriend said once Taylor was gone, she walked outside and saw toilet paper in the trees. She said Taylor came back around 6 a.m. Tuesday and knocked on the front door. She said he left his items outside in bags for him to collect and he picked them up and left the residence, the report said.

The homeowner said after Taylor left Tuesday morning, he saw multiple items were missing from the front porch, including a Chicago electric table saw valued at $200 and a blue Duralast jack valued at $80. He also said the toilet paper in the trees would take about 30 minutes to clean if he could obtain a ladder to reach into the trees, which was an approximate value of $20, according to the report.

As the deputy was leaving the incident location, the homeowner came to the patrol car while on the phone with Taylor, who said he didn’t know where the victim’s items were but he wanted to collect his things from the residence. The deputy spoke with Taylor on the phone and Taylor said he would like to meet in person about the homeowner taking items of his. The deputy told Taylor to call the sheriff’s office when he was available to meet, the report said.

As the deputy was leaving again, the homeowner walked back to the patrol car and showed a text message from Taylor saying he would like a “trade for trade” regarding the table saw. Later Tuesday, the deputy received a call from the homeowner saying Taylor was at his residence wanting to trade the items. The deputy responded to the incident location and met with Taylor in person, according to the report.

Asked what happened, Taylor said he and his ex-girlfriend got into an argument and she told him to leave the residence. He said she only gave him his work clothes and a hoodie. Taylor said since neither his ex-girlfriend nor he homeowner gave him all of his items, he took the homeowner’s saw so he could hold onto it until he got the rest of his clothes back, the report said.

When asked about the toilet paper, Taylor said while he was waiting outside around 1 a.m., he saw a roll of toilet paper and decided to throw it behind his head to make a mess, according to the report.

Taylor was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was released early Thursday on $1,500 bond. No court information was available.
