Yield to pedestrians when turning on green

To the Editor:

I’m glad to read that our city officials have scheduled a meeting to address transportation safety. I saw a woman step down just as a vehicle was turning into her path today when she started to cross with the walk light. If I hadn’t yelled, she likely would have been struck because the driver did not stop. Neither driver nor pedestrian saw each other because their view was blocked by a pole. This is the situation at so many intersections in Ocala. The drivers and the pedestrians get their signals to go at the same time, so drivers turning right proceed without hesitating, and pedestrians have to keep looking back as we walk forward to make sure no one is going to hit us. It should be the opposite, since pedestrians have the right of way. I have had cars turn into my path when I was crossing with the walk light many, many times, and only once have I seen one pulled over for turning in front of me. God bless that motorcycle cop! I hope more will join in his effort, and better yet, that more drivers will be made aware that they are required by FL law to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
