Recorded phone calls bring new charges against man accused of killing former MCSO corrections officer

A 23-year-old Cape Coral man accused of murdering a former corrections officer is now facing additional charges after he allegedly conspired to kill another inmate during recorded phone conversations.

On October 21, 2021, Marquee Dashawn Williams was indicted for murder in the first degree with a firearm in the killing of former Marion County Sheriff’s Office corrections officer Ronnie Charles Damon.

On the evening of January 6, 2016, MCSO deputies responded to Larch Road in Ocala and found Damon deceased in the driveway of his home.

Damon had suffered a single gunshot wound. MCSO investigated the shooting and determined that Damon had been working on his vehicle at or near the time of his death.

According to MCSO, a lengthy investigation uncovered that Williams had attempted to rob Damon. During this attempted robbery, Williams allegedly shot Damon.

MCSO stated that Major Crimes Detective John Lightle discovered new leads and the case was presented to the grand jury, which culminated in the indictment.

Williams was in the Collier County Jail at the time of the indictment. He was transported to Marion County Jail, and then in December of 2021 he was transported to the Florida Department of Corrections.

Detective Lightle began to monitor the recorded phone calls that Williams made while in custody. While reviewing those calls, Detective Lightle noticed that Williams often spoke in code.

Since Detective Lightle was aware that Williams was a professed gang member, the detective enlisted the help of an FDOC analyst to decipher the terms that were used during the recorded calls. According to MCSO, the detective determined that Williams was allegedly soliciting and conspiring with others to use a network of inmates to murder another FDOC inmate who was a witness to Damon’s homicide.

On Saturday, Williams was transferred to Marion County Jail where he is currently being held without bond. He is facing additional felony charges for conspiracy to commit murder, solicitation to commit murder, and tampering with a witness in a capital felony proceeding.

A court date has been scheduled on Tuesday, March 29 at 9 a.m., according to jail records.
