Marion County Parks and Recreation Director Jim Couillard was recently re-appointed to the Florida Greenways and Trails Council.

Couillard spent two previous terms sitting on the Florida Greenways and Trails Council. During 2021, Couillard was elected to serve as vice chairman of the Florida Greenways and Trails Council. The overarching goal of the Council is to advise the Florida Department of Environmental Protection on issues related to trails of all types, greenways, and the prioritization and funding of the statewide trail systems.

“This will be my third two-year term on the Council. During the first two, I was still a bit green in understanding our mission and what type of impact we have. Years three and four were really hindered by the pandemic, so now, we are really working well together and making great decisions for the future,” said Couillard.

Throughout his tenure on the Council, Couillard has developed important relationships which have allowed him to focus on aligning priorities and potential funding for the 250-mile Heart of Florida Loop Trail which runs right through Marion County. This loop is expected to become a major contributor to eco-tourism in Marion County, which would provide recreational and economic benefits to the community.

When asked about his most recent appointment to the Council, Couillard said, “I am looking forward to continuing to serve in this capacity.”
