Ocala Police Department reminding motorcyclists to ride S.M.A.R.T.

Due to a rise in motorcycle crashes throughout the city, the Ocala Police Department is offering safety tips for motorcyclists and drivers.

This year, over 40 motorcycle crashes have occurred in Ocala, and four of those motorcyclists lost their lives. The police department is reminding all motorcyclists to ride S.M.A.R.T.:

  • Say no to drinking and riding.
  • Make yourself more visible to motorists.
  • Always wear your helmet when you ride.
  • Ride in control – within legal and personal limits.
  • Train regularly and get endorsed.

In addition, the police department is reminding drivers to always be on the lookout for motorcycles. All drivers should watch their blind spots closely, double-check mirrors, and use extra caution when driving near a motorcycle.

Judging the speed of an approaching motorcycle can be difficult, so drivers should give motorcycles extra time to pass by or take extra time to assess the motorcycle’s speed.
