Belleview resident discusses Marion County’s grocer options

To the Editor:

To Diane Turner – you may want Costco, but the vast majority of us don’t care. There are constant complaints from others about slowing or stopping the growth of Marion County. You can’t have it both ways.

We have two Sam’s Clubs and a BJ’s that you didn’t mention. Personally, I’ve found nothing on either the BJ’s or Costco websites that interests me. I have to have a lot of items shipped to me because there is nothing within 100 miles that carries what I need. I do shop at Sam’s Club because it is near the new VA clinic where I have many appointments, but even there, some things have to be shipped.

I’m not trying to be rude, but if the company doesn’t see the area as needing one location, why would they build four? Orlando has a much higher population, and they only have three. If they don’t already have one here, it should tell you that it isn’t going to build four new locations here. Add current supply issues and high inflation, and this is not the time to be spending money on new locations.

The nearest Costco to me is in Altamonte Springs, which is about 60 miles away. I live near the Belleview Santos Elementary School. To get to the nearest Costco from there, you can follow US-441 S to FL-436 E in Orange County (1 hr 28 min – 53.8 miles), and then follow FL-436 E to the destination in Altamonte Springs (12 minutes – 5.3 miles).

This route is well marked. Buy a several-month supply so the gasoline costs aren’t so bad, or have things shipped. There are faster routes, but they are longer and one is on a toll road.
