Marion County Fire Rescue is mourning the loss of a firefighter who passed away on Sunday following a lengthy battle against COVID-19.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved colleague and friend, Driver Engineer Charles “Chuck” Westphal,” stated MCFR in a social media post on Monday morning.
“Chuck’s journey was one of unwavering resilience,” stated MCFR. In August of 2021, Westphal began facing a daunting battle against COVID-19, and he fought with immense strength and determination.
After regaining some of his strength, Westphal “demonstrated his remarkable character by returning to the weights, embodying the firefighter’s spirit of never giving up,” added MCFR. He continued to fight up until Sunday, February 4, when his battle against COVID-19 came to an end.
Westphal leaves behind a legacy of camaraderie, bravery, and commitment to the local community. MCFR viewed Westphal as more than a colleague; he was also considered family.
“Let us remember Chuck for his infectious laughter, his unwavering dedication to our mission, and the countless lives he touched throughout his career,” stated MCFR on social media. “As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the life he lived and the impact he made on all of us.”
MCFR concluded the post by stating that Westphal’s bravery and dedication will continue to be a source of inspiration. “We will carry (his) legacy forward, always standing strong together as one family.”
