City looking to spend nearly $300,000 for cables, other ‘inventory’ for Ocala Fiber Network

The Ocala City Council will consider the purchase of nearly $300,000 worth of fiber optic cables and materials for Ocala Fiber Network.

The matter will be discussed by the council during its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 7, at 4 p.m.

According to records, on April 5, the city issued an invitation to bid for inventory materials for use in Ocala Fiber Network’s day-to-day operations.

Generally, the city issues bids for inventory materials to obtain the lowest prices possible. Awards are made based on the lowest responsive and responsible bidder in each category.

On April 12, the city selected seven vendors’ bids, totaling approximately $238,184 worth of fiber optic cable materials.

If approved, the contract will include purchases of $100,397 of materials from GRESCO, a Wildwood-based company, and $51,960 of materials from Adams Cable Equipment, a Kansas-based company.

Last month, Ocala City Council members approved a $100,000 consulting agreement with a Colorado-based company to help the city determine the “growth and viability” of the city’s fiber network.

The Ocala City Council regularly meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at Ocala City Hall (110 SE Watula Avenue).
