A Marion County firefighter who passed away earlier this year following a lengthy battle against COVID-19 will be honored during the 2024 Florida Fallen Firefighter Memorial later this year.
During the ceremony, which will take place on Friday, November 15 at the Florida State Fire College in Ocala, Marion County Fire Rescue Driver Engineer Charles “Chuck” Westphal will be memorialized.

In a social media post on Friday, August 1, MCFR stated that Westphal’s name will be added to the Memorial at the Florida State Fire College in recognition of his “ultimate sacrifice and unwavering dedication to the community he faithfully served.”
Additionally, Westphal’s name will also be inscribed on the Fallen Firefighter Memorial located at the State Capitol in Tallahassee.
Three years ago, in August of 2021, Westphal began facing a daunting battle against COVID-19. MCFR stated that his journey was “one of unwavering resilience,” and he fought to the end with immense strength and determination.

After regaining some of his strength, Westphal “demonstrated his remarkable character by returning to the weights, embodying the firefighter’s spirit of never giving up,” added MCFR. He continued to fight up until February 4, 2024, when his two-and-a-half-year battle against COVID-19 came to an end.

Westphal leaves behind a legacy of camaraderie, bravery, and commitment to the local community. His fellow firefighters viewed him as more than a colleague; he was also considered family.

“Let us remember Chuck for his infectious laughter, his unwavering dedication to our mission, and the countless lives he touched throughout his career,” stated Marion County Fire Rescue.
According to MCFR, Westphal’s bravery and dedication will continue to be a source of inspiration. “We will carry (his) legacy forward, always standing strong together as one family.”
