A 36-year-old Marine Corps veteran who says he suffers from PTSD was arrested in Silver Springs Shores after a neighbor and a law enforcement officer allegedly saw him fire several gunshots outside of his residence.

On Wednesday, an Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a home located on Cedar Course in Silver Springs Shores in reference to shots being fired in the area. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with a neighbor who advised that she had seen muzzle flashes from a gun coming from a nearby residence, according to the arrest report.

A few seconds later, the deputy looked towards the home in question, which was approximately 25 yards away, when several gunshots were heard. The report stated that the corresponding muzzle flashes from the gunshots “silhouetted a dark figure” who was standing “in plain view.”

The deputy ordered the individual, who was later identified as Kashif Kaheel Aris, to drop the gun. After complying with this order, Aris lowered himself to the ground and placed his hands behind his back, and he was detained in handcuffs, according to the report.

Aris told the deputy that he is a combat veteran of the United States Marine Corps, and he stated that he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The report stated that after being read his Miranda rights, Aris allegedly voiced his “discontentment with his current life situation among other various stressors.”

Aris was arrested and transported to Marion County Jail, where he is currently being held on a $1,000 bond. He is being charged with firing a weapon in a residential area.

A court date has not been scheduled yet, according to jail records.
