A local father who coached Dunnellon Pop Warner football was tragically killed from injuries he sustained during a workplace accident last week, just 25 days after his 16-year-old daughter lost her battle with brain cancer.
Family and friends are mourning the loss of Charles “Chuck” Thomas, who passed away over the weekend from injuries he suffered during a workplace accident. Thomas was in the Intensive Care Unit leading up to his death.
In a statement posted to social media, Thomas’s wife, Amber, indicated that her late husband would have his organs donated on Monday.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone for all of the support we have received during this very tragic time. It is very much appreciated! Not only has Chuck impacted so many people while he was with us, he will continue to help others as he is an organ donor,” reads part of the statement from Mrs. Thomas.
The widow says the family will host an honor walk at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital in the coming days for those seeking to memorialize Thomas’s life and organ donation.
Thomas was an active member of his community, serving as a coach for the Dunnellon Tigers Youth Athletics Pop Warner football team.
“Coach Chuck’s kindness, compassion, and unwavering spirit will remain with us always” reads a statement from the Dunnellon Tigers Youth Athletics.
Thomas’s death comes just three and a half weeks after his daughter, Vanessa, lost her battle with brain cancer on December 10, 2024. Vanessa, who was described as having a “smile that could light up a room,” was just 13 days shy of her 17th birthday.
According to a GoFundMe that has been established to support Thomas’s wife and their children, Amber has not returned to work since the passing of her daughter.
“She is taking care of her 5 kids with no income at this time. If anyone can please help in any way possible, it would be greatly appreciated,” reads a statement from the GoFundMe established by Thomas’s sister-in-law, Alexus Johnson.
In addition to the GoFundMe, a MealTrain has been created to provide food and groceries to the Thomas family.
